WATSONVILLE, CA (November 30, 2010) – The new version of the popular “Strawberries” app for the iPhone and iPod Touch, is now available for free download in iTunes. In addition to 100 ways to enjoy strawberries, the app features recommendations on ways to get kids to eat healthier, general nutrition tips from well-known dietitians, dozens of recipes for kids, and links to the hottest food bloggers and nutritionists on the web.

The “Strawberries” app, when initially launched, was selected by Apple as a staff favorite and has already been downloaded by tens of thousands of people. The new addition is expected to wow users even more with its focus on health and brand new “kid-friendly” category to give parents fresh ideas on preparing creative and healthy meals and snacks for the whole family to enjoy.

“Strawberries are one of the healthiest and most versatile fruits to include in a family’s daily diet because they are low in calories, supply more than 100 percent of the daily requirement for vitamin C, and kids love them,” said Dave Grotto, RD, and author of 101 Optimal Life Foods. “This app is an easy and fun way to help folks get inspired to eat more strawberries in more ways.”

The California Strawberry Commission’s goal for the strawberries app is to provide consumers with simple and creative ways to take advantage of this naturally sweet super fruit that’s available throughout the year. All the recipes and nutrition tips can be shared directly from the app via email, Facebook or Twitter.

Today’s “Shelvic Exam”?

Materne GoGo squeeZ, is a “no spoon, no mess”, all natural 100% fruit squeezable applesauce. Each 3.2 ounce resealable pouch contains a handy straw for maximum slurpage and delivers the equivalent of one fruit serving without added sugar. GoGo squeeZ comes in-five varieties: apple, apple-banana, apple-cinnamon, apple-peach and apple-strawberry.

The Materne company is the most popular applesauce company in France and boasts more than 1 billion pouches consumed to date. GoGo squeeZ’s can be found in more than 2,000 supermarkets and retailers across the US. It is also available through amazon and other online retailers.

Nutrition Smackdown? This is a fun and convenient way of getting your kids to eat fruit and is only 60 calories per pouch. I only wish Materne used their creativity, beyond cool packaging, to find a way to include the peel of the apple which contains much of the vitamin C and fiber found in whole apples.

Cost? I found a range of $0.62 to $0.82 cents per pouch. They come in individual boxes of four and you can find them by the case of 48 units online. I also couldn’t find any information if the packaging is ‘environmetally friendly’ and the cap may be a choking hazard for the little tikes – be aware.

Taste? Overall, this is a pretty cool product. I asked my daughters, Katie and Madison, what they thought of it…

Guess a picture does say a 1000 words!

Can you guess I’m just building\figuring out as I go? I have had several people contact me today and ask, “Whats up with your blog post that lined up all the way to the left?” Well, I just found that is the template design I chose and until I add more posts, it will stay that way – guess it is yet another incentive for me to blog and blog often. Let’s see how it looks after I post this.

Another comment was “Your posts are waaaaaaaaaaay to long.” I agree. That was just my “Letting you know who I am and junk” but I promise that I will pull out my brevity powers and get down to business in a concise way.

Also found some dead links – working on those. Let me know if you come across anything else.

I picked up an itouch for each of my daughters for Christmas and not only are they hooked, I am too!  As you may know, there are very cool apps that can be downloaded for free. Speaking of, here’s a cool app from my friends at the California Strawberry Commission that features 50 unique strawberry recipes from 50 of the most popular food bloggers!

–       Remember, it’s free! Here’s the link for the app at the itunes store: http://bit.ly/8LANJo

Let me know what you think…
